Pressurizing emergency staircases to save lives

75%
Deaths for inhalation of smoke

15%
Maximum oxygen level in a fire

1 m/s
Minimum airflow in pressurized staircases

The Challenge

Avoid that the smoke resulting from the combustion of several materials during a fire invade the evacuation route that in a building are the emergency staircases.
During a fire radiation, smoke and toxic gases are generated on a large scale that spread horizontally and vertically through a building. This situation increases the impact of such elements in the human being occupants and is the cause of 75% of the deaths for inhalation of smoke regarding this type of disaster.

The Solution

Pressurization of Staircases stipulates the importance of having a positive pressure that avoids combustive and toxic gases from flowing through to the escape route of a building creating a safe passage for occupants during evacuation.
SAEG Engineering Group distributes, installs and provides maintenance services for this type of fire systems comprised of one or two ventilators of great capacity in addition to a set of ducts, sensors and devices that are activated automatically in case of a fire alarm. Smoke detectors send a signal to the alarm control panel that at the same time activates a mechanic injection of outdoor airflow into the staircase shaft, providing positive pressure that avoids that combustion materials enter the building. This process favors evacuation and minimizes the vertical spread of the smoke.

The Benefits

Minimizes vertical spread of smoke
Facilitates evacuation
Save lives
Meets security local and international regulations

“Currently pressurisation of staircases is the most modern and efficient response regarding smoke control in escape routes”.
